There is one rule about timing to know before anything else: the approaches to the Festival zone are open to chauffeur-driven vehicles until 5pm, with drop-off points near the Gare maritime and the underground car park. After that hour, vehicles park on the neighbouring boulevards and the last stretch is on foot. Everything about organising an arrival in Cannes in May follows from that sentence, published by the Festival itself.
The 2027 edition
The Cannes Film Festival will hold its 80th edition from Tuesday 11 to Saturday 22 May 2027. The selections are traditionally announced in April, and accreditation applications open in early February. No accreditation is carried over automatically from one year to the next, and an environmental contribution of €24 is added.
Bear in mind that the Festival is not an open event: it is a professional gathering, and access to the Festival zone requires accreditation. That changes nothing for the town — the whole of Cannes runs on a special footing for twelve days, accredited or not.
The 5pm rule
The Festival sets out its arrangements in detail: 500 security staff deployed across the zone, three main entrances to the Palais — the main entrance, the Méditerranée entrance and the Albert-Édouard jetty — and checks that lengthen the time it takes to get in. People with reduced mobility and those accompanying them can enter from 7.30am for the 8.30am screenings.
For a vehicle, then, the day falls into two parts. Before 5pm, a drop-off remains possible right by the zone. After 5pm — precisely when the red-carpet arrivals begin — you have to aim for a drop-off point further out and walk. The accreditation badge, for its part, gives free access to public transport through a QR code available on the “Mon Cannes” portal.
What happens on the Croisette
The traffic plan adopted by the town follows the same logic from one year to the next: the southern carriageway of the Croisette is pedestrianised, on the beach side, and the northern carriageway becomes two-way to absorb the traffic. Access to the residences, shops and hotels on the northern pavement, and to the beach restaurants, is maintained.
From mid-afternoon, diversions are put in place on the side streets running down to the sea: Jean-Jaurès, Notre-Dame, Macé, des Serbes, Maréchal-Joffre, Amouretti, Bertrand-Lepine, du Canada, Rouaze, and the Promenade de la Pantiero. Those streets are exactly the ones a driver would naturally take to reach the Palais. Hence the impression, if you do not know the arrangements, that the town has closed up all at once.
When to leave Nice airport
Cannes is about thirty kilometres from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. The Palais des Festivals gives a journey of about 45 minutes by motorway for the shuttles. That is an out-of-season benchmark; in May, between the A8 and the seafront approach into Cannes, it stretches, and more still in the late afternoon.
Three simple benchmarks:
- Landing before 2pm: you have time in hand for a drop-off close to the Festival zone.
- Landing between 2pm and 4pm: it is feasible, but the margin is thin. Tell your hotel roughly when to expect you.
- Landing after 4pm: assume from the outset that you will be dropped outside the perimeter and will walk, or take the train.
The same reasoning applies on the way back: an evening flight on a red-carpet day means leaving Cannes far earlier than you would think.
The train, the bus, Cannes-Mandelieu
The train
This is Cannes’s quiet advantage: the station is six minutes’ walk from the Palais. The Palais des Festivals lists direct Inoui and Ouigo services, with 5 hr 15 from Paris, 2 hr from Marseille and 4 hr from Lyon. During the Festival, a TER from Nice remains the most predictable way of travelling between the two towns: it depends on no traffic plan.
The express bus
Line 81 of the Zou network links Nice airport to Cannes. It leaves from Terminal 2, stand 2, and serves Terminal 1 on request. The Palais des Festivals gives a service from 8am to 10pm leaving the airport and from 7am to 7.45pm leaving Cannes. Tickets are bought before boarding: a surcharge applies on board.
Cannes-Mandelieu
Cannes-Mandelieu airport, west of the town, handles business aviation and is in heavy demand during the Festival. Its advantage is obvious — it is far closer to the Palais than Nice — but it does not exempt you from the traffic plan: the last stretch meets the same closed streets.
Parking
The underground car park at the Palais des Festivals has 924 spaces on three levels, including 15 for people with reduced mobility, and 49 electric charging points. During the Festival it is not a fallback: it fills early.
The scale of the crowd
The official 2026 figures help to calibrate expectations. Halfway through the 79th edition, the Festival reported more than 52,000 accreditation applications — up 3 % on 2025 — and 35,000 festival-goers already in Cannes, for more than 102,000 admissions across 124 screenings. All those people move within a few hundred metres of the Palais, at the same hours.
That is the real reason a badly timed arrival costs so much time: the problem is not the distance, it is the density.
How to plan
| Drop-off | What is possible | What to allow for |
|---|---|---|
| Before 5pm | Drop-off by the Festival zone, near the Gare maritime | The exact address of the hotel, not just “Cannes” |
| After 5pm | Drop-off on the neighbouring boulevards | Limited luggage, shoes you can walk in |
| By train | Station six minutes’ walk from the Palais | Independent of the traffic plan |
| By Zou bus line 81 | From Terminal 2 at Nice airport | Ticket bought before boarding |
And for the screenings: booking opens between four days and fifteen minutes before the showing, depending on the type of accreditation. In other words, your programme firms up late. Better a means of transport that can be settled at the last minute than a ticket bought in advance for a time you will not keep.
The detail that saves the most time. Give the name and exact address of your hotel, not “the Palais” or “the Croisette”. Which side of the northern carriageway it stands on determines the authorised drop-off point, and so the distance you will have left to walk.
